More Than a Supplier: A Journey of Color, Craft, and Growth with Our Japanese Client

At YIYI, we believe that the best collaborations are born from shared passion, patience, and trust. Among the many partnerships we’ve built over the years, one stands out—a heartwarming journey with a talented Japanese client whose dream was as creative as it was inspiring: to see her original animal-designed hair claws displayed in a museum.

From a Message to a Meaningful Partnership

Our story didn’t begin with a large order but with a simple message through our website’s contact form. She introduced herself as an independent designer developing her own brand and wanted to turn her original animal-themed sketches into real products. I replied immediately, eager to collaborate with such a creative spirit. From that moment, our partnership began to grow.

Because color was at the heart of her designs, I first sent her our Color Cards. I explained that this palette would be the foundation for bringing her artistic vision to life. Fortunately, she used WeChat, which made our communication effortless and creative from the very start.

Crafting Every Detail—One Color at a Time

Her first sketch was stunning—a beautifully intricate animal motif. But unlike a single-tone accessory, this piece required multiple acetate layers and colors to achieve its lifelike features. She selected colors from the digital card but found it challenging to visualize how they would look in real material.

To help her make confident decisions, I went the extra mile. In our design department, we have an entire wall of physical acetate color cards and swatches. Whenever she hesitated between two shades, I would take real photos under consistent lighting—holding samples side-by-side to show subtle differences, such as the shimmer of a glittery transparent blue versus the texture of a patterned one. We repeated this process for every part of her first design — comparing more than a dozen shades for just one custom hair claw.

Our design and engineering teams were equally involved. While she directed the creative concept, we offered technical suggestions—combining splices and engraved lines to enhance authenticity while reducing costs, optimizing curves for balanced proportions, and proposing color pairings that would complement her aesthetic while staying true to the material’s properties. It was a true partnership between art and craftsmanship.

Meeting in Japan: Turning Collaboration into Connection

After weeks of collaboration, the first sample design was finalized and ready for production. During this time, I shared every stage of progress with her—close-up photos, updates from the workshop, and feedback from our technicians.

Then came a wonderful surprise. Two months into our collaboration, YIYI participated in a trade show in Japan, and I invited her to visit our booth. She made a special trip to meet us in person. Seeing her face-to-face for the first time was unforgettable. At our booth, she explored our full range of hair claws, examined our acetate color cards firsthand, and shared new creative ideas for future designs. That meeting transformed our relationship from a digital collaboration into a genuine creative friendship.

Growth Through Craft and Trust

When she received her first sample, her reaction was pure delight—followed by thoughtful suggestions for fine-tuning the design. We quickly integrated her feedback and finalized the mold for bulk production. Her first order was just 50 pieces per design, but as her brand gained traction and her animal clips began captivating customers, her orders steadily grew—100, 150, and 200 pieces.
