Splice, Engrave & UV Printing: Aceetate Hair Accessory Techniques

In the world of premium acetate hair accessories, cellulose acetate is highly favored by brands and designers for its unique luster, texture, and depth of color. However, what truly defines a product’s quality and sophistication goes beyond the material itself—it lies in the choice of craftsmanship. Different processing methods yield entirely distinct visual effects and cost structures.

Below, YIYI Accessory according to 10 years of experience in the acetate hair accessory industry, uses our commonly used three techniques—splice, engrave, and UV printing. We’ll examine their features, effects, costs, and typical scenarios encountered during standard production.

Splice

Features:

  1. Use acetone to join the edges of acetate sheets of different colors and textures. The entire process must be done by hand.
  2. Piecing together is mostly used for larger areas of color blocks. Of course, some of our skilled workers can also piece together smaller color blocks. However, very small color blocks may develop cracks or be unstable.

Effects:

  1. It can utilize the diversity of acetic acid colors to reproduce the colors of the customer’s pattern design to the greatest extent.
  2. It requires a high level of craftsmanship from the craftsman; otherwise, cracks may easily appear during the shaping process.
  3. At the same time, color bleeding may occur in the spliced parts due to the dissolution of acetone, which will make polishing time-consuming and may not be completely clean, especially for solid color boards.

Cost:

  1. Relatively high. Material waste and handcrafting make this a premium technique.
  2. The higher precision required also increases labor time.

Engrave

Engrave Process Engrave Colors

Features:

  1. When the lines of a client’s design are too thin or the pattern is too small, and splicing cannot achieve the desired texture or UV printing, we recommend engraving to realize the client’s design.
  2. The most common technique used in acetate hair accessories is to laser or mechanically engrave patterns, logos, or textures on the surface of acetate.
  3. The colors of the lines are all manually mixed by us. We use pigments that match the design to fill in the lines and small areas, which can maximize the reproduction of the design’s colors.

Effects:

  1. Engraving techniques can create intricate textures, three-dimensional light and shadow effects, or personalized brand logos. Such as the strawberry pattern shown in the image.
  2. Suitable only for lines and small areas. Applying to large areas may result in uneven pigment distribution.
  3. Lines smaller than 0.5 mm cannot be engraved and can only be printed using UV printing.

Cost:

  1. Moderate to high. Equipment cost is relatively high, but the processing of single pieces is flexible.
  2. The larger the batch size, the lower the cost per unit.
  3. Fine lines do not have suitable cutting tips and need to be manually polished by workers, which increases costs.

UV Printing

Features:

  1. UV inkjet printers print color patterns directly on acetic acid surfaces.
  2. UV printing is commonly used in complex designs, enabling photo-quality color printing without being limited by the number of colors.
  3. During UV printing, variations in ink, machine, material of each print, and even ambient temperature can lead to differences in the final product across batches. However, we can maintain 90%-95% consistency between different batches.

Effects:

  1. The colors are rich, and the patterns are clear.
  2. UV printing may result in color differences, and the lack of splicing creates a more realistic effect.
  3. Since the printing process involves manual placement, the outer contour may be slightly skewed.
  4. The clip part of the gripper is not suitable for printing, as it may cause the gripper to break. Therefore, UV printing is more suitable for flat surfaces.

Cost:

  1. Medium, offering high cost-effectiveness. The price mainly depends on the printing area and the complexity of the design.
  2. If the customer’s design can combine engraving and UV printing, it can save a lot of costs. This is also the method we most often recommend.  → View Case

Choosing the Right Technique

Each technique—splice, engrave, and UV printing—has its own strengths in design expression and cost efficiency.
